A Step-by-Step Guide to Data-Driven Maths in the Classroom
Effective formative assessment relies on timely, accurate data. However, for many Australian teachers, the administrative burden of managing student accounts and dashboards often outweighs the pedagogical benefits.
PerciGo solves this through a "Bring Your Own Database" model. Instead of student data living on our servers, it lives in your private Google Sheet. This guide explains how to connect your classroom in under two minutes.
Why use Google Sheets for Tracking?
By leveraging the Google Sheets API, PerciGo ensures that student privacy is maintained within the school's existing ecosystem. Teachers retain 100% ownership of the data, allowing for custom analysis, easy reporting, and long-term progress monitoring without ongoing subscription costs.
Technical Setup Instructions
- Click here to make a copy of the PerciGo Tracker Template.
- In your new Google Sheet, navigate to Extensions > Apps Script.
- Click the blue Deploy button at the top right and select New Deployment.
- Click the Gear icon, select Web App, and change "Who has access" to Anyone.
- Click Deploy and authorise the permissions.
- Copy the Web App URL (this is your unique Class Code).
How to Connect Your Students
Once you have your Web App URL, simply share it with your students (via Google Classroom, Seesaw, or email). Students then follow these steps:
- Open Student Settings in PerciGo.
- Add their name as you want it to appear in your spreadsheet
- Paste the URL into the Class Code box.
- Click Save.
From that moment on, every Star, Medal, Trophy, or Diamond they earn will appear instantly in your spreadsheet, categorised by year level and topic.
Classroom Implementation Ideas
Successful teachers use this data to differentiate their instruction. By glancing at the tracker, you can identify a small group of students who have yet to earn a Star in Friends of Ten and provide targeted intervention, while students with Trophies move on to more complex Place Value challenges.
