Set up PerciGo Tracking in Google Sheets
Effective formative assessment relies on timely, accurate data. However, for many Australian teachers, the administrative burden of managing student accounts and dashboards often outweighs the pedagogical benefits.
PerciGo solves this through a "Bring Your Own Database" model. Instead of student data living on our servers, it lives in your private Google Sheet. This guide explains how to connect your classroom in about ten minutes.
Why use Google Sheets for Tracking?
By using a Google Apps Script web app that writes straight into your own sheet, PerciGo keeps student data within the school's existing Google ecosystem. Teachers retain 100% ownership of the data, allowing for custom analysis, easy reporting, and long-term progress monitoring without ongoing subscription costs.
Technical Setup Instructions
- Click here to make a copy of the PerciGo Tracker Template. If Google says the Apps Script file will also be copied, click Make a copy again. This is normal.
- In your new Google Sheet, go to Extensions > Apps Script.
- Click the blue Deploy button at the top right and select New Deployment.
- Click the Gear icon, select Web App, make sure "Execute as" is Me, and set "Who has access" to Anyone.
- Click Deploy, then Authorise access, and choose your Google account.
- Copy the Web App URL. This is your unique Class Code. Keep it somewhere handy.
- Back in your sheet, open the 📈 Percigo menu (to the right of Help; reload and wait 10 seconds if it's missing) and choose ⬆️ Update level headers, then 🎨 Apply tier colours, then 🔄 Set up / refresh Progress tab. Wait for each to finish.
- "Apps Script file and functionality will also be copied": when you copy the template. Click Make a copy. The script is what saves results and builds the tabs, and you can read it under Extensions > Apps Script.
- "Google hasn't verified this app": when you deploy. Click Advanced, then Go to PerciGo Tracker (unsafe), then Allow. Google uses this wording for any script that hasn't been through its review. This one is your own copy.
- "Connect to an external service": the first time you use Update level headers. Click Allow. It downloads PerciGo's public list of level names from percigo.com.au. No student or sheet data is sent.
How to Connect Your Students
- Open Student Settings in PerciGo.
- Add a profile with the student's name and a 4-digit PIN, then tap the name to select it.
- Paste your Web App URL into the Class Code link box and click Save Class Code.
- Each student does this once on each device they use.
From that moment on, every Sprout, Rosette, Star, Medal, Trophy, or Diamond they earn will appear in your spreadsheet, categorised by year level and topic. They appear after each timed session.
Classroom Implementation Ideas
Successful teachers use this data to differentiate their instruction. By glancing at the tracker, you can identify a small group of students who have yet to earn a Star in Friends of Ten and provide targeted intervention, while students with Trophies move on to more complex Place Value challenges.
Tracking Progress Over Time
Your tracker includes a Progress tab (and a 📈 Percigo menu). It compares each student's first recorded result on an activity with their best result so far.
- Use the the yellow dropdowns at the top to filter by student, year, strand, topic, first achievement or best achievement. The table and averages update as you change them.
- For example, filter Best achievement to Diamond to see what those students achieved on their first attempt.
- Achievements are scored from 1 (Sprout) to 6 (Diamond). A decimal shows progress towards the next one, so 4.50 means a Medal and halfway to a Trophy.
- If new results have come in, choose 📈 Percigo > Set up / refresh Progress tab to update the tab.
